Why Do Long Car Rides Make Drivers Drowsy?
Long car rides tend to be through areas that are fairly sparse and down highways spotted with trees. Seeing the same scenery over and over again, plus the monotony of driving a long straight road can make anyone drowsy after a while. Plus, the driver is focusing on quite a bit while they’re driving, even if they don’t really realize it, so they are wearing down even though it doesn’t really feel like they’re doing anything.
Can Taking Breaks Really Help?
One thing most people recommend is to take frequent breaks. Every couple of hours, stop at a rest stop or gas station, get out of the car, and walk around for a little bit. This gets the blood flow moving again, breaks up the monotony of the drive, and gives the driver the chance to use the restroom or grab a bite to eat. This can help reduce the chance of the driver getting drowsy faster and can enable them to do a much longer drive than they might if they kept going.
What About Stopping to Sleep?
If the drive is taking a significant amount of time and the driver does start to feel even a tiny bit drowsy, stopping for a quick nap can help them overcome the drowsiness and get back on the road.
